Victorian Refugee Health Network E-bulletin October 2010
The Victorian Refugee Health Network brings together health, settlement and community services to be more accessible and responsive to the needs of refugees and asylum seekers.
The E-bulletin provides a regular forum to share news and information to support practitioners and services in providing health care to people of a refugee background.

News and Events

1. The Refugee Health Nurse program has been expanded in the City of Wyndham and new positions have been developed in the City of Greater Bendigo and the City of Casey. For further information click here
 
2. Specialist outreach clinics in the Western region. Health West Partnership has developed the "Refugee Health Services in the West Referral Guide for General Practice" which provides a summary of specialist outreach clinics (infectious diseases, dental, optometry and maternity) with location and contact information, click here for a copy. 3. New TIS National online forms now available. The first new form is a pre-booking form for telephone interpreting. The second new form is for medical practitioners to register for a TIS National client code so they can access fee-free interpreting through the Doctors Priority Line. The online medical practioner registration form can be used by general practitioners, specialists and pharmacists. 4. Multilingual Pregnancy DVD - 'Your Pregnancy Your Health' is an African antenatal DVD available in Somali, Dinka and Arabic. The DVD was developed to inform and encourage women to present early for antenatal care and to improve antenatal health and subsequent birth outcomes of women and their babies from small and emerging African :communities.  For further information please contact: Gordana Kostadinovska (02) 8759 3828 or email Gordana_Kostadinovska@wsahs.nsw.gov.au

5. "Mental Health in Sri Lanka" - Centre for International Mental Health (CIMH) International Conference. The conference will be formally opened by Professor David De Krester, Governor of Victoria. Thursday 28th – Friday 29th October 2010, at International House, University of Melbourne. The conference venue has limited capacity and early registration is advised. Click here for more details.

6. Lunchtime seminar - “Emotional and Behavioural issues among children and adolescents of refugee background living in South Australia." This seminar organised by CIMH will be presented by Dr Tahereh Ziaian from the University of South Australia, Friday 5 November, 1 - 2pm, Room 515 (5th floor) 207 Bouverie St, Carlton. 7. Refugee Health Series: for GPs, Refugee Health Nurses and Practice Nurses organised by the Northern Division of General Practice, the Dandenong Casey General Practice Association, Pivot West and Foundation House. The final forum on Wednesday 10 November will address Mental Health Issues in Refugees with Dr Harry Minas, Director, Victorian Transcultural Psychiatry Unit. At Foundation House, 6 Gardiner St, Brunswick, 7.15 - 9.15pm (light meal from 6.45pm). Category One ALM points applied for GPs; and Category Two points available for single sessions. 8. Workshop: Culturally relevant health promotions. Organised by the Centre for Culture, Ethnicity & Health (CEH) this workshop explores how to involve CALD communities in health promotion strategies. 9. Sexual and Reproductive Health of Refugees: the recent Australasian Sexual Health Conference in NSW included a presentation by Dr Jill Benson on a University of Adelaide project to create new guidelines for the management and prevention of infections in refugees.
