Victorian Refugee Health Network E-bulletin November 2010
The Victorian Refugee Health Network brings together health, settlement and community services to be more accessible and responsive to the needs of refugees and asylum seekers.
The E-bulletin provides a regular forum to share news and information to support practitioners and services in providing health care to people of a refugee background.

News and Events

1. English for bilingual health and community work. This full-time course run by Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE (NMIT) in 2011 comprises the Certificate III in ESL (Employment) and the Certificate II in Community Services. Includes work placement in a health or community organisation. For a flyer click here

2. Interpreter scholarships available in Victoria. The Victorian Multicultural Commission (VMC) is offering scholarships to students enrolled in the RMIT Diploma of Interpreting to become interpreters in: Assyrian, Haka (Chin), Tedim (Chin), Kurdish (Kurmaci), Kurdish (Sorani) and Pashtu. Scholarship recipients will receive $2000. Applicants must be fluent in English as well as the listed languages. Applications close on 1 December 2010. 3. New DVD - 'Can I do it my way?... Yes!' Action on Disability within Ethnic Communities (ADEC) has released "Can I do it my way?...Yes!' The DVD tells the stories of 5 remarkable individuals with a disability from different cultures. The DVD is dubbed in five languages (Vietnamese, Sudanese, Arabic, Somali, Chinese-Cantonese and Mandarin) with subtitles for people with hearing impairment. For more information or to purchace the DVD see ADEC's website, call 9480 1666 or email info@adec.org.au

4. 'A place to call home' newsletter. Refugee Services Aotearoa New Zealand, the primary agency helping refugees to resettle in New Zealand, has an electronic newsletter to keep people up to date with their services. To subscribe to this newsletter click here

5. Talking TIS biannual publication

6. Symposium: Researching Refugees and Asylum Seekers: Ethical Consideration
. This free symposium is presented by Researchers for Asylum Seekers and the McCaughey Centre and will be held on Wednesday 17 November in Room G08, Law Building, 185 Pelham St, University of Melbourne. RSVP by Friday 12 November, is required for catering purposes to Karen Block: keblock@unimelb.edu.au. Further information is available on  Researchers for Asylum Seekers and McCaughey Centre websites. An audio recording of the presentations will also be available there after the event.

7. Training: Palliative care speakers training for ethnic communities - Palliative Care Victoria and the Ethnic Communities Council of Victoria (ECCV) are offering a free training workshop for ethinic communities on how to talk about palliative care. The training will be held on Friday 19 November from 10 am - 4pm at the Centre for Culture, Ethnicity and Health, 81-85 Barry Street Carlton. For more information visit the ECCV website. 8. Seminar: Workplace Health for Immigrant and Refugee Women. The final Multicultural Centre for Women’s Health (MCWH) Seminar for 2010 will address issues that immigrant and refugee women face in the workplace and the implications for their health and wellbeing. The seminar will be held on Thursday 25 November at MCWH, Suite 207, Level 2, Carringbush Building, 134 Cambridge St., Collingwood. RSVP by Friday 19 November to Dr Salma Al-Khudairi, Education and Training Officer  (03) 9418 0999 or training@mcwh.org.au. Cost is $65 per person and includes lunch.

10. "Australia's hidden homeless: community-based approaches to asylum seeker homelessness." This report has been released by Hotham Mission. It is available in a full or summary version from the Hotham Mission website.

11. Launch of the Victorian women's health and wellbeing strategy 2010-14. The Victorian women’s health and wellbeing strategy 2010-2014 identifies priorities for action to improve women’s health including targeting priority groups  such as refugee women. Electronic copies can be downloaded from the Victorian women's health and wellbeing strategy website and hard copies can be requested by emailing diversity@health.vic.gov.au
