Victorian Refugee Health Network E-bulletin January 2010

The Victorian Refugee Health Network brings together health, settlement and community services to be more accessible and responsive to the needs of refugees and asylum seekers.
The E-bulletin provides a regular forum to share news and information to support practitioners and services in providing health care to people of a refugee background.

News and Events

1. Diversity in Health 2010 call for papers closes 8th of February 2010; will bring 800 practitioners, researchers and policy-makers together for Australia's most dynamic debate on diversity, health and wellbeing. The conference includes a refugee health stream. Diversity in Health 2010 will be held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre from 7-9 June 2010. 2. Refugee/Humanitarian Entrant Catch Up Vaccine Order Form and Eligibility Criteria has been updated; The form provides a guide for additional vaccines for Refugees and Humanitarian entrants. 3. Changes to Medicare Primary Care Items; changes to the Medical Benefit Scheme to take effect from May 1, include four new time-based health assessment items to replace current schedule. The Victorian Refugee Health Network GP working group is following up with Department of Health and Aging regarding the details of the changes and impact on GPs who see refugee patients. Resources

4. Cue Cards in Community Languages by Eastern Health; a resource developed by Eastern Health Transcultural Services to assist health professionals and clients/carers who primarily have English language difficulties, or problems  communicating with each other. First launched in 2007 this resource is getting close to 20,000 ‘hits’ a month. The resource has a new web address. For further information and to view this resource click here

5. Centre for Multicultural Youth e-News (CMY); is a bi-monthly electronic newsletter for anyone interested in multicultural youth issues. It includes feature articles, CMY updates, a postcard from the field, and up-to-date information about new resources and events. CMY have many programs that support multicultural youth including those who have experienced interrupted or had little schooling. To view the latest CMY eNews click here

7. Refugee Health Training for nurses; A two day intensive introduction course will be conducted on March 22 & 23.  This is part of a two year program covering all aspects of refugee health care. Further topics in semester 1 include; Supporting families and Women’s Health and Wellbeing. For further details click here . 8. Foundation House’s Course for Counsellors; This two day course provides counsellors with additional skills for working with refugee survivors of torture and trauma. The first course will be run in Dandenong on Feb 24 and March. For further details click here. For registration form click here

Research

9. “Refugee resettlement, family separation and Australia's humanitarian programme”; published by the UNHCR, written by Brooke McDonald-Wilmsen and Sandra M. Gifford. This is a qualitative study that interviewed a number refugees in Melbourne exploring how they perceived family, the impact of separation and the impact of the Australian governments policy regarding family reunion on refugees living in Australia.
